Platiinum Jewelry

Once regarded as a nuisance by Spaniards mining gold, platinum was cursed because it was intertwined into the gold. In their understandable ignorance, since it resembled silver in many ways it was named “Platina” for “lesser silver” as less desirable than even silver of the day.  Platinum came to the jewelry bench only after scientists and laboratories discovered its properties Such properties as the high melting point were not interesting for the jeweler to investigate. However, because platinum is not found in its isolated form but rather naturally mixed in with gold, early pieces would randomly sometimes contain a significant proportion.

One of the primary figures in the history of platinum was the French Goldsmith, Marc Etienne Janety.  His work stirred interest in platinum among jewelers perfecting a method of processing platinum, enough to create precious objects such as a sugar bowl today owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.  Then in the 1800’s as gold mines offered platinum up, it was also gathered and made into wonderful objects which entranced the kings of the time by the new metal’s mysterious charms. Platinum was also a sought after metal pounded into threads and embroidered into the gowns of women of riches and royalty in Europe.

Cartier had the foresight and artistic aptitude to dare to create entire pieces made in platinum.  As his business expanded into England and the United States, he produced traditional styles with this new precious metal.  Platinum gave diamonds and other gems a whole new lighter look.

Today Platinum is known as the most precious metal in the planet, it is produced not only in fine jewelry but also in a more everyday area: engagement and wedding rings.  Platinum is symbolic of the precious nature, endurance, of marriage.

At this time we have few subcategories in the Platinum Jewelry category.  Chains, Cross Pendant, Earrings and Wedding Bands are currently the choice of selection.  In the next 6 months we plan to expand our selection of platinum items to keep up with customer choice.
